WHO WE ARE
Rooted in Identity. Rising in Leadership
From Roots to Wings Development Initiatives is a youth-focused nonprofit dedicated to nurturing leaders who stay grounded in their roots while leading with purpose, peace, and positive impact. We primarily support Black African-Canadian and Black immigrant youth, while welcoming young people from all background who are eager to grow, participate, and lead. Our work aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and is rooted in building inclusion, equity, and unity across society.
OUR MISSION
We empower Black African-Canadian and Black immigrant youth to embrace their roots while growing their wings. Through mentorship, leadership training, peacebuilding, anti-racism initiatives, economic empowerment, educational support, and wellbeing-focused programs, we support their growth in confidence, character, and compassion. Together, we are raising young leaders who celebrate their identity and stand for inclusion, equity, and unity across communities.

To see Black African-Canadian youth deeply rooted in their heritage, leading with peace and purpose, and actively contributing to a more inclusive, equitable, and united multicultural Canadian society. Empowered with the wings of leadership, skills, and character, they build bridges across cultures and help shape a harmonious and sustainable future for all.

Cultural Identity, Heritage Education & Integration
Rooted in Heritage:
We celebrate Black and African heritage through education, storytelling, and cultural exchange. By connecting youth to their roots, we strengthen their identity, confidence, and sense of belonging in Canada.
Youth Leadership, Civic & Community Engagement
Rising with Purpose:
We empower youth to lead with integrity, empathy, and purpose. Through mentorship, workshops, and community projects, they learn to collaborate across cultures and build unity through service
Social Cohesion, Anti-Racism & Peaceful Communities
Leading with Peace:
We help young people build inclusive relationships, challenge racism, and resolve conflicts with empathy. Our goal is to strengthen unity and create communities where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.
Skills Training & Economic Empowerment
Empowered for the Future:
We equip youth with creative and professional skills from entrepreneurship and digital literacy to leadership and teamwork, supporting their pathways to higher education and meaningful careers.
Character Building & Healthy Living
Strength from Within :
We nurture respect, responsibility, & integrity through mentorship & community outreach. Our anti-drug & wellness programs encourage healthy choices & positive lifestyles that uplift others.

Impact Statement
Since our founding, From Roots to Wings Development Initiatives has reached youth through mentorship, workshops, and community events that celebrate identity, foster belonging, and inspire leadership. Our programs have helped participants build confidence, improve leadership skills, and engage in intercultural dialogue, strengthening community cohesion across Windsor-Essex.
We continue to collaborate with community organizations and local partners to expand our reach and deepen our impact.

"Discovering where I come from has given me a greater sense of purpose."
One of the biggest lessons I've learned through Root2Wings is that our African identity is something to be proud of. Although we may face unique challenges as young Africans growing up in another country, we have the ability to excel beyond expectations through determination and excellence. The lectures have also taught me the importance of maintaining a growth mindset being willing to learn, improve, and embrace feedback instead of allowing criticism to discourage me. These lessons continue to motivate me to pursue excellence while staying connected to my heritage.

Root2Wings has taught me that although opportunities may not always come equally, our determination, character, and faith can set us apart. Instead of allowing obstacles or people's opinions to define me, I've learned to keep striving for excellence and prove my abilities through hard work. One lesson that particularly stood out to me is the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with God, because when our spiritual foundation is strong, it positively influences every other area of our lives. This mindset gives me confidence to keep moving forward regardless of the challenges I face.

One of the things I appreciate most about the Root2Wings Lecture Series is that it exposes us to important conversations that are rarely discussed in school. It has helped me realize that being African is about much more than simply speaking a language or identifying with a culture—it is about understanding our history, identity, and the richness of our heritage. I also learned the value of becoming multilingual and how speaking multiple languages can create greater opportunities for education, careers, and personal growth. Every lecture leaves me learning something new that I can apply to my future.

The Root2Wings Lecture Series has helped me understand that belonging to a country is about more than simply living there—it requires embracing its culture while remaining proud of your own heritage. I have learned that I can be proudly Canadian while still honouring my Nigerian roots and values. Another valuable lesson has been the importance of learning multiple languages. In Canada, bilingualism can open many doors professionally, and understanding this has motivated me to continue developing my language skills as I prepare for my future career.

Root2Wings has shown me that belonging in Canada goes beyond having citizenship—it means actively participating in the community, building relationships, and taking advantage of opportunities that help you grow. I also learned how valuable learning French can be, not only because it is Canada's second official language, but because it can create more educational and career opportunities in the future. The lessons from Root2Wings continue to encourage me to become more involved, develop new skills, and prepare myself for greater success.

The Root2Wings Foundation Lecture Series has helped me understand the importance of knowing my roots and embracing my heritage. I've learned that our culture is something we should never take for granted, especially while living abroad. It has reminded me that success requires hard work, resilience, and continuous learning. One lesson that has stayed with me is to accept constructive criticism with humility, reflect on it, and use it as an opportunity to grow rather than react negatively. These lessons have inspired me to become a better version of myself every day.
